The Augusta School District has established a graduation requirement of community service to be performed by each student. The purpose of the community service requirement is to help connect Augusta High School students with the community by gaining knowledge and experience in the areas of responsibility, civic duty and networking skills.
Students must perform the following number of community service hours in order to graduate from Augusta High School:
Class of 2025 - 24 hours
Class of 2026 and beyond - 32 hours
Guidelines:
• Service hours must be completed out of academic class time.
• Service hours may be completed through any nonprofit organization, government agency, or community group. Examples: school district, nursing home, community center, library, hospital, Lions club, food pantry
• Service hours must be completed for organizations in the Augusta community or that serve the Augusta community.
• Service must be completed under the supervision of an adult at the organization.
• Students may not receive any kind of compensation (money, gifts, etc.).
• Service hours may not be performed for a relative.
• Service hours may not be part of any disciplinary action issued by the school or courts.
• Service hours may not be part of being a member of any class or co-curricular school activity. Examples: participating in athletics, choir/band performances, participating in the musical, class hours for a student-run school business, attending membership meetings
• Service hours may be part of needed volunteers for school sponsored events or activities. Examples: volunteering in the school closet, selling tickets or flowers at the school musical, serving refreshments at concerts and open houses, Beaver Bolt volunteer, working a station at a track meet
Procedures:
• Students may perform service hours from the summer prior to their freshmen year through May 1 of their senior year. Service hours must be completed no later than May 1 of senior year, or students will not receive their high school diploma.
• Students should complete a minimum of 8 service hours per school year, in order to distribute service hours throughout their high school years and to promote the practice of ongoing service to others.
• All community service hours must be documented with a Community Service Contract signed by an adult associated with the organization, the student, and the MS/HS principal.
• Community Service Contracts will be stored as part of the student’s record. Service hours will be documented in Skyward.
