Welcome to the Department of Special Education. The Augusta Area School District is committed to providing individualized support and inclusive programs for students with diverse learning needs and meet the eligibility criteria for Special Education. We collaborate with families, educators, and specialists to ensure every child receives the resources and opportunities they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Together, we create an environment fostering growth and success for all students.

This is an opportunity for ongoing child development check-in, for children ages 3 and up until they enter kindergarten. As a family, it is important to know:
- Typical child development (CDC Milestones Moments Online)
- Where is my child on their developmental journey? (ASQ-3 Ages and Stages Questionnaires)
- What resources are available in our community to support child development? (After the questionnaire is filled out, we will send results with activities and resources to support your child in their next steps of learning, child development day.)
At any time, a family can request an Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ3) to determine where your child is on their developmental journey. Once a year, we will formally send out a questionnaire to families with children between 3 and 4 years of age. We will be mailing these out in September. If you have not received a questionnaire or have concerns prior, please complete this form: Child Development Check-In Form

Child Find Activity
The School District of Augusta is required to locate, identify, and evaluate all children with disabilities, including children with disabilities attending private schools in the school district, and homeless children. The process of locating, identifying, and evaluating children with disabilities is known as child find. Annually this agency conducts Child Development Day and communicates with private schools for this purpose. This notice informs parents of the records the school district will develop and maintain as part of its child find activities. This notice also informs parents of their rights regarding any records developed.
Annual Notice Special Education Referral/Evaluation/Child Find
The Augusta Area School District must assess a child for special education eligibility upon receiving a request, which is called a referral. Once the referral is received, the district assigns an Individualized Education Program (IEP) team to decide if the child has a disability and requires special education services. The district also identifies, locates, and evaluates all children with disabilities who are enrolled by their parents in private or religious schools, as well as public elementary and secondary schools within the district.
Professionals such as doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, or social agency administrators who reasonably suspect a child in their care has a disability are legally required to refer the child, including homeless children, to the school district where the child lives. Before making the referral, they must inform the child's legal guardian(s) or parent(s). Others, including parents, who believe a child may have a disability can also refer the child to the school district. Referrals must be in writing and explain why the person believes the child has a disability.
*Special Education Referrals: Please contact Mackenzie Bauer, School Psychologist, if you believe a student may have academic, behavioral, social, emotional or other needs that require Special Education services.
