The Augusta Esports Team was founded in November of 2019. Under the umbrella of the Wisconsin High School Esports Association (wihsea.org), We exist to provide opportunities for Augusta Middle and High School students in 8th-12th grade to compete against other Wisconsin schools in games they're passionate about. After an initial "trial" season from January-March of 2020, we're excited to keep working toward victory in our first full year!
|
ANY STUDENTS in 8th-12th grade can join the team, whether you're an experienced gamer or you're never played a video game in your life! We are not only looking for players, but also those who may be interested in content creation and behind-the-scenes work, such as broadcasting, hosting, commentating, managing, etc. If you're interested in the Augusta Esports Team, email Mr. Zettlemoyer at rzettlemoyer@augusta.wi.k12.us for more information!
NOTE: Any 8th grade students who will be participating will need to get a Parental Permission Slip signed and returned first.
Be aware that at this time, we are only definitely looking to compete in the three games listed below (League of Legends, Rocket League, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate), however, opportunities for other games may be added as well! If you email, you can be added to a list to receive any updates on our competitive season. Other potential titles that there may be smaller competitive events in include Valorant, Teamfight Tactics, FIFA, Madden, NBA2K, Brawl Stars, and Clash Royale.

The mission of the Augusta Esports Team is to:
- Redefine gaming culture. In the age of content creation, some popular figures in the gaming world make a living exploiting negative facets of gaming culture that garner a lot of views on YouTube or Twitch, such as cyberbullying and "raging" at other players. On the Esports Team, this behavior is seen as detrimental to team play, mental health, and a positive spirit of competition and is not tolerated.
- Diversify opportunities for competitive experiences. Not every student is going to be able to play or feel comfortable playing physical sports at a high level. Esports provides students with similar competitive experiences and the experience of playing and learning on a team without some of the potential risks that are associated with physical sports.
- Increase collegiate and career pathways. Esports is a rapidly growing field with roles similar to those of traditional sports, including player, coach, content creator, host, broadcaster, producer... you name it! Students on the Esports Team will gain experience in these areas that they could turn into a gateway to college or a career opportunity.
- Promote good mental and physical health. The Esports Team is committed to helping players develop positive physical and mental habits inside and outside of gaming.

Beginning in the 2020-2021 season, conditions to be eligible to play for the team will closely align with our standards for athletics in the Augusta School District. These include:
Academic Eligibility
Students with one "F" (including incompletes) or three "D"s in the most recent grading period will be considered ineligible for one week and will not be allowed to attend practices or games. After completition of this period of ineligibility, if the student is passing all classes and has no more than two Ds, they will become eligible for competition. The scholar-gamer will remain on academic ineligibility until the time they are passing and have no more than two Ds.
In addition:
1. Repeated unexcused absences or chronic tardiness to any class will be sufficient reason for declaring a student ineligible at any time. Date and terms of ineligibility will be decided by the coach and any other relevant school staff members.
2. Participation in any event or practice requires scholar-gamers to attend all their scheduled classes the day of the event or practice, unless approval for the absence has been granted.
3. A student who is absent from any class without obtaining prior approval may not participate in practices or contests on the day they are absent, unless approval for the absence has been granted.
School Discipline
1. Any student who receives a written ODR (Office Discipline Referral) from any staff member for any reason will be ineligible to attend practice or compete in an event until they have fulfilled the requirements associated with the disciplinary action for their behavior (for example, serving a lunch detention). They may attend practices as an observer at the coach's discretion.
2. A participant who is suspended from participation by the coach due to disciplinary reasons will not compete until they are officially reinstated, the terms of which will be up to the coach and any other relevant school staff members.
3. Participants suspended from school are not allowed to practice or participate in a contest on the day(s) of suspension.
4. Participants issued an after school detention by a teacher or the Principal shall have their detention assigned without regard to the contest or practice schedule - Esports events will not be valid reasons for rescheduling an after school detention. In addition, a participant will not be allowed to attend practice or compete until the detention has been completed to the satisfaction of the Principal and/or Dean of Students.
